First Steps Wellness Centre’s Children’s Cerebral Palsy Program is based on the TheraSuit Method®, This is an intensive and specific exercise program designed to help developmentally delayed children can make gains in just four weeks that could take up to a year to achieve with conventional therapy or without therapy.
Therasuit accelerates children’s progress in sensory processing and motor skills through strength, endurance, balance, coordination, flexibility, and vestibular improvements. The program allows children to acquire skills like rolling, crawling, sitting, kneeling, standing and walking that they may not have achieved without it.
The overall concept of the Therasuit Method is to eliminate pathological reflexes and establishing new, correct, and functional patterns of movements by recruiting and creating new pathways to the brain. Therasuit has been found to be the most effective program for providing consistency necessary for muscle and neurological retraining in children.
Therasuit uses various tools and exercises and is designed to align the body as close to normal as possible. This system re-establishes posture that normalizes muscle tone and sensory and vestibular function.
Another key element is strength gains for the participant based on his/her individual needs and abilities. This is done in the Universal Exercise Unit. The UEU is a suspension system that allows for multiple ways to train muscle groups to gain function and also includes a spider bungee system. The spider encourages improved inner ear and spatial orientation while allowing the child to train muscle synergies.
